Sedona Roundabouts

construction on 179When Arizona Department of Transportation decided to improve SR 179, the decision to put traffic circles or roundabouts became a very local issue. Citizens were split. There were many meetings to decide the best course of action. The decision was finalized and twelve roundabouts were put in.  Currently there is another roundabout being added where there is a dangerous intersection near Tlaquepaque on a road that feeds the SR 89A to SR 179.

Most Drivers Have Experience With Traffic Circles

Drivers who understand how the flow works in a traffic circle do a great job of keeping the traffic moving. The idea is to find an opening in the circle and move in. For those who have not navigated a roundabout, there is no need to come to a complete stop if there is no reason to yield to traffic.  If there is no vehicle moving toward your position, and it is safe to do so, proceed with caution without making a stop.

One of the arguments for the use of traffic circles is that they are safer. All vehicles approaching a traffic circle must slow down to navigate the circle. At a traditional  intersection, head on and t-bone accidents are a true risk that is lessened by the approach of the circle.

Below is a quick video to help those understand how to use a traffic circle or roundabout.

We are seeing an increased use of roundabouts here in the Greater Sacramento region.  I have mixed feelings about them.  In areas that once looked familiar, some parts look so different that they are confusing.  The other day, I went around one roundabout twice, before I exited correctly onto the desired street.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - we have many roundabouts in our town of Bend, Oregon. And most have wonderful art in the center. The locals know how to work these, but our town swells by up to 20,000 tourists at a time during the summer and roundabout confusion becomes a problem keeping traffic flowing when we are in tourist season.

WE have these here in Minnesota.  We find that they work good at intersections that are not overly busy.  I personally like them

They do keep the traffic moving and lessen congestion if you know who has the right of way. Good post topic, Sheri.

Sheri having lived in CT, MA and NY we had a different name for them:)) These traffic circles or roundabouts in the rest of the US are referred to as "rotaries" in Massachusetts, as well as other parts of New England including parts of Connecticut, New Hampshire & Vermont.

Morning Sheri.

We have two in our town.  Most people hate them.  They are the way things are going, so get to like them or stay at home....

Sheri, we have a few around here and they seem to confuse people. The video really does a great job showing just how easy it is to navigate a roundabout.
