4 Tips to Help You Make the Sale

Remodel KitchenPrepping your home for a summer sale is a huge deal. Let’s say you live in a San Antonio home and you’re downsizing to make a cross country move to a Chicago neighborhood apartment; or maybe you’re moving into a bigger home in a nearby San Antonio area. Either way you slice it, preparing for a sale this summer is important and you should not cut any corners.

So, what’s the best way to prep your home for this summer’s big sale? Just follow these quick steps and you’ll be well on your way – and don’t forget to listen to the advice of your real estate agent, too!

See Your Home as A Buyer

You've lived in this home for years, and it's become part of you. However, you've got to make that break. Here are a few tips:

  • Say to yourself, "This is not my home; it is a house -- a product to be sold much like a box of cereal on the grocery store shelf.

  • Make the mental decision to "let go" of your emotions and focus on the fact that soon this house will no longer be yours.

  • Picture yourself handing over the keys and envelopes containing appliance warranties to the new owners!

  • Say goodbye to every room. Stand in the doorway and talk out loud about your memories.

  • Don't look backwards -- look toward the future.

Remove the Clutter

Your buyer isn’t going to have the same style that you do. So, leave the rooms open to interpretation and do some “de-cluttering” to help ease the stress on the buyer’s eye. Here are some tips:

  • If you don't need it, why not donate it or throw it away?

  • Remove all books from bookcases.

  • Pack up those knickknacks.

  • Clean off everything on kitchen counters.

  • Put essential items used daily in a small box that can be stored in a closet when not in use.

  • Think of this process as a head-start on the packing you will eventually need to do anyway.

Rearrange Your Closets and Drawers

Buyers love to take a look around – and that means everywhere. Make sure your closets and drawers are well organized. Buyers want to see a clean, crisp look and feel. They don’t want to see a closet stuffed to the top and unorganized. Here’s how you can do just that:

·         Neatly stack all of your dishes in the cupboards.

·         Organize shoe racks and coat closets by color.

·         Hang shirts neatly and in an organized, categorically sensible manner.

·         Ensure that all your dishes are organized and facing the same way.

Storage Unit Time?

Consider renting a storage unit. You probably have tons of furniture that doesn’t really fit perfectly in one space or all together as a unit – just things you’ve acquired over time. Work hard to stage your place in a modern manner and take the extra stuff to storage. It will be worth your time.

Overall, work hard to make your place look like it’s ready for someone to move in tomorrow. Buyers want to purchase a place that they can call home immediately. Organize, de-clutter, move things to storage and make the buyer feel right at home! It will be worth your time.

Jerry, excellent tips, and de-cluttering is so important.  Many want to be surrounded by their "stuff", but not when you are on the market.  Great job.
