New Housing Permits, Starts, & Completions April 2018

On May 16, 2018, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits decreased 1.8% to 1,352,000 units in April of 2018 from 1,321,000 units in March of 2018, but gained 7.7% from 1,255,000 in April of 2017. Single family building permits higher 0.9% to a rate of 859,000 units in April of 2018, from 851,000 units in March of 2018, and there were 450,000 multifamily building permits issued in April of 2018.

Nationwide housing starts declined 3.7% to 1,287,000 units in April of 2018, from 1,336,000 units in March of 2018, but jumped 10.5% from 1,165,000 units in April of 2017. Single family starts increased 0.1% to a rate of 894,000 units in April of 2018 from 893,000 in March of 2018, and there were 374,000 multifamily building starts in April of 2018.

Nationwide housing completions rose 2.8% to 1,257,000 units in April of 2018 from 1,223,000 units in March of 2018, and jumped 14.8% from 1,095,000 units in April of 2017. Single family completions dropped 4.0% to a rate of 820,000 units in April of 2018, from 854,000 units in March of 2018, and there were 425,000 multifamily completions in April of 2018.
