What Else Could A Proud Grandfather Want?

A few days ago we went to Palm Coast, an 80K+ city about 35 miles north of Daytona Beach.

A 40-minute ride and we are at 1,000-seat Flagler Auditorium, county school Performance Arts Center. It is packed, we have to go to the balcony. It was the final performance of the season for Flagler Youth Orchestra.

Our 18-year old grandson Shane is playing base (he is on the far right). This year over 400 children were studying music and participating in the performances. Actually, there are several orchestras of different level and age and a string ensemble.

Some children are with the orchestra for over a decade. Our Shane has been with it for 8 years. This year he is graduating, so this was his farewell hurrah…

Not every county can pride themselves on having an orchestra, and its existence and survival heavily depend on volunteers and on donations. And devotion to what they are doing. Great people, indeed.

My grandson will not be a professional musician, but these years with the orchestra opened the world of music to him, and so many other kids.

I understand that their performance is not flawless, and how could it be. But watching them, makes me proud, and what else does a grandfather need?

Jon,

Did you mean your grandson is on the far left?  He is a very handsome young man.  Music is a wonderful teacher and does open one's eyes.  It has its own language, and when you learn a language, one acquires an additional soul and expands their understanding.  A

Jon- you have every right to be proud!! What an achievement especially when so many young people have their heads buried in devices!!! This brought back memories of when I was in the Junior All-City Orchestra in Houston. (I wasn't very good!)
