It's Free Admission Saturday

Dormers and Terra cotta ornaments on Custom House MuseumOn the second Saturday of every month you can bring friends and family and everyone gets in free. This is one of the great reasons to visit Downtown Clarksville and this historic site. Though the Customs House Museum is interesting to visit any day of the week when you get in free it makes it even better. This is an opportunity to learn more about the area and the City of Clarksville..

Check out the permanent exhibits and featured exhibitis being offered at the Museum.

The beautiful architecture makes this building Clarksville's most unique building. You'll find it located on the corner of Commerce and Second St. across from the Montgomery County Courthouse.

The Customs House Building dates back to 1897. To see the full history of the Museum click here. The oldest portion of the building was designed to be used as a Federal Post Office for the tobacco businesses of Clarksville. Visit the postmaster's office on the first floor of the museum.

The architect William Martin Aiken used several of the styles popular during the Victorian Era so the building takes on an eclectic look. It has served many purposes over that last 50 years.

Take a look at the roof. It has 20 dormers, an ornate tower in the middle and large copper eagles at each corner. Gargoyles watch over the courtyard at the corners and watch points of roof.. Steeply gabled windows and Terra Cotta ornamentation accent the exterior of the building. Marble from Tennessee makes up the flooring in the building in the main structure.

The History of the Customs House in Clarksville

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It was also used as the Department of Electricity for the City of Clarksville. The museum is across the street from the Historic Montgomery County Courthouse.

Opening times are from 10am to 5pm, on Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1-5pm on Sundays. Annual memberships are available. Be sure to visit the gift shop for some specially handcrafted gifts.

Debbie that is a very unusual building.  You don't see that kind of detail in buildings being built today.
