Change Is Inevitable...

Topic Idea Set-up

As we know, change is inevitable. Change is the price we pay for progress but in many cases, we can struggle with the change or we can adapt quickly and make it work for us. A common reference to resisting change is "If it ain't broken ....Don't fix it!"

A change that I saw coming back in 2013 was the use of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) or drones.  Back then, only extremely high end listings were using this feature. I saw a video of a home on the cliffs above Laguna Beach and the UAV went from inside the home to outside patio and over the cliff and came back to the patio. It was stunning. I knew right then this was the wave of the future and we should embrace it.

The Challenge

Ask yourself....

What do you see as a change that you thought might be a call for concern.  Or did you ignore this change because you thought it was going nowhere?

In the recent past there have been many technical advances, rule and process changes, marketing changes. All in our industry can accept the challenge because every segment of the business has been touched by change.

Topic Summary

I think this is a topic that can be fun and a learning opportunity.  How well did the participate adapt to the change? How long did it take? Are you still struggling with it?

Two parts -

Part 1

One image or video that illustrates the change

  • Describe a particular real estate change in the last 2-3 years
  • How has it affected you in a positive or negative way and how have you adjusted to this change.

Part 2

One image or video that illustrates the way you made it work for you

  • What did you learn and how did you make it work for you? What have you done to overcome the impact it has had on your business or personal life.

1000 points awarded for 300 words minimum

Additional 500 points awarded if you include (along with answering the questions above) a futuristic look at a change you believe is something that will become the norm in 5 years and why you think it is the future. For example, 5 years ago, would you have thought videos and virtual tours would be the norm like it is today?  Think out-of-the-box.

The 500 points will be awarded based on your interpretation of how your futuristic idea will affect the industry.

This challenge could be done anytime of the year.

Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable. William Pollard

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I just had this conversation - yet once again today - on how this biz is going to look totally different in 5 or so years.  I see it happening now in my area and it's only going to grow bigger and bigger.  The time is NOW to give this serious thought and consideration.

Morning Sheri.

For me it won't really matter. In five years I may retire for the third time, then again I like what I'm doing so, who knows.  Great idea

Sheri, this is a really good idea, and with the different business models, Zillow getting into the selling of real estate, wonder what we shall see in the next five years.

Sheri, yes, I agree, change is inevitable, and the rate of change is accelerating. What do we see as a new trend today that would be a mainstream practice tomorrow. Great reason to think about it and write about it. Will residential real estate remain local? Will it become even more standardized? What new skills will our role require?

Hi Sheri

There is no doubt we all have to deal with change, like it or not, and this provides a great way to think creatively and be proactive. It would be good learning for those who participate but think of the value for the readers, too! And I would love to hear what people think about the future 5 years from now.
