A Long Excuse

We've all heard those kinds of excuses when really the best thing is "I'm sorry, I messed up.What can I do to make it up to you?"

A Long Excuse

“The longer the excuse, the less likely it’s the truth.”

Robert Half 1918 – 2001, American Businessman

As I see it . . . . . . .

A long excuse

I would say a long excuse is always interesting . . . .

The longer the excuse becomes the wider the gap becomes between the truth and the excuse. In fact some excuses would make a miniseries on TV.

What’s interesting is some people will put in more time and effort into creating the excuse, then in doing what had to be done right . . . .  the first time.

When you start to hear a long excuse for whatever it is . . . . The excuse is creating a long and slippery path . . . . and the other person is asking you to take the journey with them.

I can tell you from past experiences . . . . that’s not a journey that you want to take.

When the long excuse comes into the conversation . . . . the other person is trying to mislead you and misdirect your thinking in the wrong direction.

The best way to defuse a long excuse is to ask specific questions . . . . to gather the information that you need to make a good decision. Also when the other person starts to ramble at the first opportunity either restate your question . . . . or ask a question to get a direct answer to get them back on track.

A long excuse . . . . is only  talking points with weak substance. Stay focus on asking questions that will lead the person to answer the question directly. One of two things will happen as a result of your questions . . . . you will get answer . . . . or the other person will lose the composure and look reality bad.

This is very true.  Any excuse is worth less the longer it takes to explain

Absolutely agree, Kathy Streib. It's SO much easier just accepting responsibility for a mistake. Plus the truth is a lot less to remember than what excuses you've made...

Thanks for sharing,
Bruce

I long ago learned that excuses never make a situation better and even sorry doesn't help at times, but it is good to acknowledge a mistake.
