Selling Your Home? Do You Know What Turns Off Buyers? {Infographic}

Do You Know The Top 6 Buyer Turn-offs When Selling Your Home?

It's all about the senses when you are selling your home. What buyers see and smell when they enter your home can make or break their interest in your home and with that, your chances of selling it quickly.

The HouseHunt infographic below shows the top 6 home turn-offs home sellers should avoid... and they all go back to visual and audial appeal. All of these can be dealt with quite easily BEFORE you put your home on the market and in many instances quite inexpensively. You can "stage" your home on a budget. It really is true that you don't get a second chance to make a good first impression. Don't lose prospective buyers because you haven't prepared your home for sale to avoid their pet peeves.

What Turns Off Home Buyers

Some Additional Home Buyer "Turn-offs" To Be Aware Of:

  • Paint colors that are not neutral.
  • Worn flooring whether it's carpet, wood, or laminate.
  • Lack of storage space (often it's a matter of freeing up closet space to make them look more spacious).
  • Brass fixtues (and so easy to replace these and update the look of the home).
  • Distracting pets in the home when showing.

Nina,

This another one of your wonderful informative posts.  The majority of buyers lack imagination, and a home should be shown by paying attention to your list.

When we bought our home in Los Angeles, it was full of overgrown ivy, trees of all the 3/4 of acres..etc.  The kitchen was a mess, with red brick linoleum.  The pool deck was cracked, as was the pool plaster.  The bones of the house were magnificent, and we loved it and got a great price on it!  A

These indeed do turn off a buyer. You can see it on their faces and they wonder why the seller doesn't do anything about it.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel ~ good morning, Alexandra... my point precisely... sellers end up leaving lots of money on the table when their homes are poorly presented because most buyers have no ability to see past that.

This is very illuminating insight, Nina Hollander! I'm surprised odor and clutter didn't get bigger percentages - then again, I only say that because those would be the hugest pet peeves of mine, personally. Lol. - Tim

Hi Tim... it does say that 56% of buyers are turned off by odors... I think you missed that. And 15% are turned off by cluttered rooms.

You're right, Nina Hollander - I just thought they would both be up in the 70-80% pet peeve range. Over 50% is still a lot, though! - Tim
