Here's an easter gift for you

I am an old timer on the rain. 10 years ago you could write a post on Active rain and it would show up on google within 15 minutes if you did it right.  ( Ah those were the days)  Then came the google changes which did away with that.  Been around since 08 and I want to share with you two ways of  real estate blogging.  There are two main ways of blogging.

  1. Blogging to build an audience and a following for your community.  You could also blog about an interest to get a following like Atlanta sports
  2. Or the second way is blogging for key words and links back to your site.

I myself blog the second way.  I started out blogging for an audience.  I blogged about my community and what was happening in there.  The problem I had with that is I had too many people calling me about directions to a place I had written about, or when was the event happening.  I was getting more non real estate calls than I was getting prospective buyer calls.   I made the mistake writing about foreclosures and boy did I get calls from people losing their homes.  People that were days away from losing their house.  They were looking to stall the bank from taking it.  That was when I started rethinking my way of blogging.

I don't want people that haven't paid a bill in a year to call me and tell me that they want to figure a way to stay in the house longer.  I don't need to listen to them go on and on that the bank isn't fair.  Or how they can scam the bank longer.   That isn't my goal in blogging.  I don't mind being a good samaritan and tell the caller where the shuttle parking is for the car show.  BUT THAT IS NOT WHY I WAS BLOGGING!!!!  I don't want to be an information booth for events.  Yes I want to be know for my community but that way of blogging wasn't working for me.

So I switched to #2 way of blogging.  I started thinking of where I wanted to show up in google keywords.  I took the time to learn about long tail keywords.  I wrote multiple articles on my webpages, active rain, linkedin, patch.com, and a wordpress blog site on the same subject with variations of the same longtail keyword.  For example if I wanted to get ranking on "cedar island lake homes white lake mi"  I wrote about it on various sites and varied my wording, pictures, and style.  I then changes up the wording so I could show up on "Cedar Island Lake White Lake MI" or "lakefront homes for sale Cedar Island Lake White Lake MI" .  After all not everbody puts in keywords the same way.  I honestly did not use keyword finders because I was after longtail keywords.

Then on my blogs and websites I carefully designed a link strategy where I had 3 blog sites that provided links to my websites.  On my websites and personal owned blog sites I did interlinking to past blogs and other pages.  Over the years I just kept writing.  I have had websites providers go out of business and others that I had to change because they were no good. 

But I kept writing.  Consistently adding blogs, and web pages.  I kept to the longtail key words.  I changed with Google changes to longer blogs and had to go back in and change websites to get google strength.  So now I am in my 10th year of writing and I rank for thousands of pages and thousands of various keywords.  I own 200 local lake real estate keyword for so many variations.

So what I urge you to do even if you blog for your community is to write to what you want to be found by.  Do not try to fight the big boys.  To rank for "real estate" or "homes for sale" in a major city is tough.  Take the easy way out and rank for hundreds of keywords in your area.  For example

  • best "Commerce" realtor
  • lake homes on Maceday Lake in Waterford MI 
  • Addington Subdivision in Novi Michigan
  • top rated Michigan real estate agent
  • Moving to Tulsa
  • Los Angelus relocation guide

If you write about subdivisions then do a blog on many subdivisions  and link to all the individual ones you did.  If you write about golf club communities do a main page linking to past posts or other pages.  It's about interlinking to past posts.  You just have to be careful that you don't become a link farm.  Use one or two sites to link to your personal sites.   For example if you use active rain or tumbler to link to your personal site.  Then do not link from your personal site back to activerain or tumbler.  Try to get a link from active rain to an interior page of your website too.  Change up the variations of keywords.

Last another trick I use is I have a stock of  10 drafts on active rain.  They are unpublished posts that I have made with keywords for different sites.  For example

I have all my links to my website pages on one draft on active rain.   So I can quickly write a blog and insert a couple of links without doing extra work.  I don't have to go back and forth to the site I am linking on.  It is a time saver to do this.

This has worked for me and yes it has been ten years of work, but the ten years has flown by.  I own so many 1st pages of google and you can too.  If you are writing plan to be on page one.

I LOVE this idea of creating a draft page where you have the links. I've got a spread sheat to help me see how much (actually how LITTLE) I blog and their are links there. I'm pretty sure you can search an Excel spreadsheet. 

But this is probably a more "central" place to do this. I can see it here in AR and on my actual sites, just saved as a draft post there too.

I do not understand why this post wasn't featured! So glad Kathy Streib shared it. I laughed so hard reading the parts about the phone calls you were receiving. I've been there and done that. I too was getting lots of calls that had nothing to do with getting me any business. I no longer write those localism posts.
