Why Do Things Always Break Right After The Warranty Expires?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Aspen Lane Real Estate Colorful Colorado CRE# 40005863

Remember the old commercials where the Maytag repair men would be just sitting around with nothing to do?  Those were the days before all the high tech which comes with appliances these days.

Last night I went to fill up my water glass before bed and saw some crazy errors displaying on our 25 month old refrigerator.

I spent the next hour emptying the freezer and frig so that food wouldn't spoil.  My husband was busying googling the error messages and checking our warranty only to find we were a month late and a dollar short.

He called the company this morning and they informed him that they would be glad to sell him an extended warranty but it would not allow repairs for 30 days.  I guess spending $1,600 for a refrigerator isn't a guarantee that it is going to last.

Once he was able to dissect the problem he found a chunk of ice which had formed over the fan of the motor.  One of the blades broke off and it was frozen in time.

We were able to order a replacement fan with overnight shipping and should be chilling by tomorrow afternoon.

I always try to look at the bright side of things.  For this situation - there are a few bright sides.

I needed to give the refrigerator a deep clean and throw out any old food items which needed to hit the road.

We have a refrigerator and freezer in the basement which works great so we didn't experience any food loss.

I was thirsty at 10:00 pm last night and noticed the message on the refrigerator door before turning in for the night.

So what is my husband going to do between now and when the fan arrives?  He is going to order the extended warranty to cover the next 3 years!

Belinda- I do believe that there is a Warranty-fairy whose sole aim is to keep things working up to the warranty, and then break. LOL   Thank goodness you noticed it and that you had another refrigerator!!!!

Hi Belinda,  So glad you had a back up place for your food!   If something is going to break, it is going to be right after the warranty expires.

Some times we for get that having a warranty also comes with an annaul maintance checkup with we often don't call in to have done.  I've learn that its during these annual inspections that changing some components helps to extend the life of the unit.

Unfortunately we have experienced many of the same issues with appliances.  We are currently waiting on a part ourselves, for our dryer :)

Ugg! This happens so often I have started to wonder if manufacturers are building in a self destruct system.

Belinda Spillman - Have you noticed appliances don't seem to last as long as they did years ago? Why, I would bet there are people out there who still have functioning Avocado or Harvest Gold Refrigerators and Stoves! I sold a property last year and the buyers didn't seem to mind it was a Harvest Gold Kitchen.

I love how you look at the bright side and problem solve to determine what's wrong and you get it fixed without depending on some warranty service. Not only are you a smart real estate agent, you're a very smart consumer too! Buyers and Sellers would be wise to contact you first!

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Hello Belinda Spillman in the old days you didn't have to buy an extended warranty, companies took pride in building things that lasted.  Now, everything is disposable and the price of the extended warranty is the new normal.  So sad...and frustrating!

Our local appliances parts store manager told my husband that they build the parts to last one year plus a week. He has seen it happen over and over.
