Edward de Bono Six Thinking Hats Theory

The Six Thinking Hats Theory

and how it can be helpful

in Real Estate...

One of the best techniques I have used over the years has been the "Six Thinking Hats" process. I learned about this technique many years ago in one of my Management classes, and it has been proven to be very useful in many applications and functions. Especially decision making. When faced with making a decision, try using the Six Thinking Hats theory to look at the situation from different angles and perspectives.

The Six Thinking Hats theory was developed by Edward de Bono.  Corporations and Businesses around the world use this simple and effective process.

By exercising the Six Thinking Hats theory, people become more focused and more engaged.  It affords the opportunity to look at a problem or situation from many angles.

How is works:

White Hat = The Facts

Yellow Hat = The Positive Points of View

Black Hat= The Negative Points of View

Red Hat = The Emotional Aspects

Green Hat = The Possibilities, Opportunities

Blue Hat = The Control Process

I have used this technique on a regular basis over the years and have found it very useful during negotiations, or when faced with making a very important decision.  This can be used solo or in a team situation.

If you aren't familiar with the Six Thinking Hats method, the author, Edward de Bono has written many books about the Six Thinking Hats theory as well as many others.  I highly recommend that you obtain a copy of his book and study the technique yourself.  I believe you will find it very useful in so many business situations, or when faced with making major life changing decisions

Should I take this offer on my home?  Should I downsize? Should I relocate?

Decisions such as these are all life changing decisions, and by utilizing this exercise, the decision will become much clearer and objective.  Try it next time you have a decision to make.

Joyce I have never heard of this technique but I  love it... the only one I heard of was the "black hat technique for SEO" and I knew that was bad:) Endre

Useful technique for a wide variety of decisions. The book is a short easy read but really this article tells you all you need to start using the technique.

The six hats are a great framework for working out the details - I love it. And I would also ask what the control process means.

I, too, have never heard of this theory. what a great introduction for us. These concepts make a lot of sense and your last paragraph really sums up how we can use these principles. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Joyce,

Sounds like an interesting method. I use some of these already, since buying or selling real estate is not a trivial decision.
