It's all about Balance and Staying Calm

Years ago I was involved in an intensive leadership course that went on for weeks. One of my favorite experiences was the High Ropes Course.  It scared  the living bajeebers out of me! They roped us up and then one by one we had to lean over a cliff - kind of like we were going to take off like a bird. I didn't handle it well on the first try but by my 2nd try I realized that we were totally safe. What a freeing feeling looking out over a gorgeous valley 'flying'. Well not really flying but it felt like time was suspended. A few years later when I was on staff one of the guys who was roped up had this idea that he was supposed to jump off and climb back up. OMG you can imagine our surprise when we saw him go over the cliff! Thankfully he was just fine. He came up smiling thinking that was the best thing ever! From then on we gave better directions about how High Ropes Course was all about Balancing Oneself and Life.

The 50 foot telephone pole was my favorite. We had to climb up the pole and then stand up on both feet, all the while the pole was swaying (seemed like a LOT of swaying) due to nerves!  At the bottom of the pole I could hear everybody cheering me on and saying stuff like - you can do it Anna, go for it Anna.  So I did. Once I got balanced I stood up tall looking out over the valley and thought WOW this is amazing!  What I forgot to do was reach out for the golden ring which was a couple of feet away. Instead at some point I lost my balance, tried to regain it but alas I could not. I remember thinking at the time that I had failed the exercise but I knew I really didn't. I got many more chances to climb the pole over the years and it was a blast. What I learned was the more I stayed balanced throughout the entire process, and kept my mind calm, I could accomplish anything. That was a big awareness for me back then. I've brought it forward to this moment and from time to time when I need a little balance in my life I look at this picture  - and remember the lesson.  It's all about Balance and Staying Calm in every situation!

Good morning Anna Banana Kruchten CRS,CRB .  Sometimes we learn a lot from perceived failure, don't we?  One failure can take us to amazing new heights.

Good morning, Anna!

Another way to learn balance and staying calm is with horses.  Riding a horse is all about balance.  If you are off balance, there is a good chance you will end up off the horse.  Plus, since horses mirror the riders, if you are nervous, the horse will be nervous and worry.  If you stay calm, the horse will also be calm.

Yikes - that looks scary.  Of course just climbing the telphone pole would be a challenge in itself.  Good job.  You reached the top and took in the view!

Anna, That is wonderful that you did such things!  I have a bad fear of heights and get sweaty palms even hearing about such things.  So not sure I could do what you did.  But doing balancing on one foot in yoga is more for me, even thought that is hard also.  Very good practice....balance and staying calm.

What a wonderful life lesson in business and personal life. I had situation this week ( personal) where I blew, my son said you should have stepped back, I told him that I thought about it and then said no because I had stepped back for 3 years and it was time to blow!

Woman! That's spectacular! Let me relay a story of how I once went hang-gliding in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. How I WISH I had been tethered so I could physically stand on the cliff and peer over the edge. I didn't have the nerve to lean over. Thankfully I didn't have to JUMP off that cliff to hang-glide as I never would have made it. Thank goodness for balance and staying calm!

Bravo!  I have always been pretty fearless (maybe even to the point of it being a bad thing), but I love that look at the photo of you being fearless to motivate you in other parts of your life.  That's a great idea.
