Alcohol is out of control in Kalamazoo MI sparks public dialog

Dear Kalamazoo Citizens:
Informed Public awareness is essential to establishing any community standard. The current Kalamazoo City Commissioners approve new liquor licenses as if they were handing out candy to children. One proudly even boasts that he is a drinker and not ashamed of it. This helps to explain why we have seen a new liquor license pop up on nearly every block downtown over the last 10 years. I believe it is time to curb the approval process of new liquor licenses as we have a record breaking amount already operating in the city. It is unfortunate the city of Kalamazoo leaders have taken a pro alcohol position, even promoting alcohol consumption in photos. Kalamazoo City Leaders need to be mindful of the negative consequences alcohol has on its citizens. Not only is it a distraction to local college students, it is directly contributing to the low graduation rates of Kalamazoo Promise recipients. Many cases of domestic abuse in the City of Kalamazoo involve drugs like alcohol. If nothing else, the unfortunate event exploited by the Kalamazoo Gazette, has sparked public dialog on alcohol and its consequences.

Richard, I agree completely!  I think there should also be a user tax when someone purchases alcohol to help fund the social services and added police presence that is so often required by the adverse impact of alchohol abuse.

Our city has a huge added police presence in our city this weekend at Purdue University because it is Grand Prix Weekend.  The bar owners make a ton of money and the tax payers foot the bill.
