Ask An Ambassador - ActiveRain Rules & Guidelines 'Genuine Effort'

We all love rules and guidelines, right? Well maybe yes and maybe no! I've been noticing a lot of blog posts lately that just don't fit into the category of 'genuine effort'. And to me 'genuine effort' sounds a bit like 'reasonable effort'. Just what the heck is reasonable effort? Go head try and explain that one....just saying.

Here are the ActiveRain Rules and Guidelines for what types of post are not  considered 'genuine effort' posts and will not be awarded points.

Does the staff police this rule, NO. At least not that I am aware of it.  And sure, of course, it's fun to play on ActiveRain every once in awhile and have some good old fashioned fun. I sure like a some fun and I'm guessing you do too!

BUT....if you're posting a lot of posts that simply don't have much 'Genuine Effort' as defined by the ActiveRain rules and guidelines ask yourself a few questions:

  • How is this bringing in business for me?  I mean really bringing in business?
  • How do other bloggers think about me as a real estate professional posting this type of post over and over?
  • Does it matter to me what other professionals think?
  • Do the 'genuine posters' take me or my less than 'genuine effort' posts seriously?
  • Am I showing off my real estate expertise to my full potential to members and the public?
  • Am I on this platform just to rack up points thinking somehow that will bring me business?
  • How can I write high quality posts?

Please take the rules and guidelines seriously

Have YOU read the ActiveRain Rules and Guidelines?

Chris Ann Cleland I am on the same page. If there were no points would they be doing this over & over? I highly doubt it and honestly, what do those points get you - a trip to Fiji?  And going deeper .... is this really portraying ones best possible business and professional side? That is easy to answer. And isn't this what we're all about - creating new business and building great relationships? It is for me.

Debe Maxwell, CRS I would like to know if the copy and paste model ( just change city  or address) actually does bring in business. I have asked this before with no answers. Is it a viable business practice? Perhaps there is something we aren't seeing!! Always good to think outside our boxes!

Anna, Guilty as charged.  Most recently, I have not been posting "real" content in the Rain.  I do post a funny on Friday ... for me, the purpose is not points. It is to keep engaged with the community and those I've connected with over the years. There will be a time in the future when I will be posting real estate related posts again.  I do want to have some fun too!

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS, while it's good to mix it up every now and then, most of us are here in ActiveRain for a reason. I enjoy a variety as long as they're meaningful and add value.

I see the effort made here as a real clue, Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS ... and indicative of what you'd see if you did business with AR members.  There are those I wish I could do business with (yourself included).  Others?  Eh .. not so much.  My referrals are based on the efforts I see here ... I doubt I'm alone.

Sometimes my days are so challenging that I don't have the where with all to write a "genuine effort" post. It could be raw and offensive if I let it out. So on those days a softer " everything is peachy keen" lighter post is my solution.

Hi Anna and thank you Belinda Spillman for reblogging this. I don't have a problem with fun posts because good grief we need the break. However, cut and paste and just copying quotes all of the time doesn't show any real genuine effort. I admit that I don't write about staging every day but I'd be bored writing about it and everyone would be bored reading it.

I've found many of the recipes really helpful although I think I may have missed Dick Greenberg's mac n cheese on the waffle grill recipe!

That said, I'd rather read something that shows me that the blogger took some amount of effort in sharing it-whatever it is- with us.

I dislike writing market stat posts (I know I need to get over that!) and tire of posting listings--coming soon,active,pending,sold--but really enjoy writing about my communities--businesses, parks, hikes, things to do. Especially on a Friday evening after a busy week, I like thinking and sharing lifestyle posts.  I believe  there is value in those types of posts.

May I introduce another important aspect to your recommendation for"reasonable effort" of AR Blogging: Avoid Plagiarized Content.

Knowing ActiveRain's Community Guidelines and ActiveRain's World View/Philosophy (which the Founders called Weltanschauung ) is that the prohibition of copying other people's work is clearly explained. Lenn Harley posted about this for years. In fact, she often successfully sued for misuse of her content. But that's another subject for another time...

Len Harley taught that while "snippets" of other writer's work are permitted, wholesale copy and paste is not. Even those snippets require citing the writer whose words one uses.

Do not plagiarize content from another source and publish it as your own. You must obtain explicit permission from the original source to republish, and give reference to such within the body of your post. Permission to re-print is NOT the same as permission to re-publish. This also applies to publishing real estate listings that are not your own.  from Community Guidelines

Thanks for permission to add the links to Community Guidelines and Weltanschauung here, Anna. All the best - Lynn

PS Everyone is welcome to learn about AR's basis and enhance Blogging Skills by joining in the 7th Annual Blog Jumpstart Challenge starting on Sunday, January 7th, 2018 at Midnight (Pacific) and ending at 11:59 pm (Pacific)  January 31st, 2018.

Thank you for your ideas. I agree that a little weekend humor is fine, but I do come here for business, so I do like a bit of guidelines and parameters to keep it as we expect it.

Well, I'm guilty of posting a recipe now and then... but it is MY recipe!  I always try to provide original content... and my own original photos or artwork.   The copy and pasters are the ones that bug me the most!

I completely hear what you're saying, Anna B. As long as it's original material, great! I've seen the occasional post that doesn't shed a positive light on the "author". Some things are acceptable as long as you add your own personal interpretation or advice, inspiration, etc., with it. Copying and pasting is boring and easy to recognize, and adds little value.

There are those blatant disregard for the rules posts with no value whatsoever, which should somehow be policed, and then there are posts that share recipes or quotes with the blog writer's input added. Personally, everything I post takes thought and time. Genuine effort! When I post a recipe or quote with one of my photos it's not something I take lightly...those posts are meant to be personal and help readers feel as though they know me more on a persoanl level.

Go away from the rain for three days and i feel so behind Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS . On Sunday's i write a light hearted blog for summer. I do not like everything to always be so serious but i did get an email asking me if i was "serious" saying i have nothing to say or that i would "not write about" something or anything for that matter.  I like all my blogs to have a story or message as part of it. Reading many other blog posts I have my favorites that catch my eye every day. Wen exploring new blogs, i look for a title and message pretty early on to keep reading or move on. I think many people just skip over those blogs that are not interesting, do not have a message or even entertain.

Excellent Anna. I've seen some of those posts and it's just plain ignorant to post like that. We all see those and it reflects badly on anyone writing them.  Amen sista!
