A closet can be and also it can be a deterrent when a buyer is looking to purchase a property. The blog below has given up plenty of reasons how and why a closet can be the focal point of one's home. First things first: Don’t try to sell your home without clothes in the closet. You don’t want to over-stuff it, because that tells buyers, “This closet is way too small for us, so it’ll probably be too small for you, too.” If you can’t get your clothes to fit, how will a buyer? Sure, maybe a buyer will think you’re just disorganized… but more likely, they’ll think that there just isn’t enough space for a reasonable person.

 

The solution? Clear out at least half of your wardrobe. Pack it in boxes and stash them in a storage unit, put them at your parents’ house, or find another place altogether. Don’t leave the boxes in the closet, either; they’ll make it look smaller than it is.

 

Now that you’ve cleared out half your wardrobe, make sure there’s nothing else in there, like seasonal décor (you don’t want to tell buyers that there’s no place in the house to store your Christmas decorations—or theirs, for that matter—right?) or a big pile of receipts and other paperwork tucked away on a shelf.

 

Your goal is to show buyers that if they buy your home, they’ll have plenty of closet space and it’ll be easy to stay organized.

 

How to Make Your Closets a Good Reason to Buy Your House

Picture the way things are set up in your favorite retailer (or in the places you wish you shopped) and keep that in mind as you:

  •          Separate clothes by style
  •          Group clothing by color
  •          Make sure your hangers match (throw out the wire and plastic hangers that come with your clothes!)
  •          Get the shoes off the floor and on a shoe rack
  •          Put all your loose items in attractive baskets or bins

Buyers can be—and have been—turned off simply because of a home’s closets. You don’t want that to happen in your home, so do something about those closets as you stage the rest of your house.

Les & Sarah, I had chuckle remembering one home I showed a few weeks ago.  The Buyers opened a closet door in the master, and lots of clothes FELL out.   Did they think the doors would not be opened?
